Each woman came from a different background and stage of life, yet they all shared a common thread of being in the midst of a journey to discover themselves despite the challenges they faced. Despite the heaviness of their personal problems, I was able to feel emotionally connected to the characters and their stories. However, the three main female characters had a lot of emotional and physical baggage that they brought with them on their summer vacation to Nantucket.Ĭancer, infidelity and a significant job loss were central issues in the novel. I was excited to read "Barefoot" because I thought it would be a light summer read. It's the story of three women who arrive on Nantucket in summer, all seeking some kind of escape. Hilderbrand's novel is a mix of beach house, cancer, affair and mom lit. "Barefoot" by Elin Hilderbrand (Little, Brown, paperback, 2008)
